Day One
Do: Sabula
Experience Iowa’s only island getaway by paying a visit to Sabula. This hidden oasis lies between Iowa’s eastern border and the Mississippi River. Explore the Island City Harbor Gift Store, enjoy the best fishing spots and hiking trails, rent a kayak to hit the water and more.
Do: Bellevue State Park
Follow the river north to Bellevue State Park for a relaxing outdoor adventure. View up to 60 different butterfly species at the park’s butterfly garden. The best time to see the butterflies is late July through early September. Continue your exploration on the hiking trails that feature scenic views of the Mississippi River and its stunning bluffs.
Eat: River Ridge Brewing
After reconnecting with nature, make a pit stop at River Ridge Brewing to refuel. Located on the banks of the Mississippi River in Bellevue, its drink menu features eight core beers, special release brews and hard ciders. Pair your drink with a selection from their food menu, which boasts massive pretzels, delicious flatbreads, wings and nachos. Do: Maquoketa Caves State Park

Most of the caves can be explored by walking, while others require crawling through tight spaces.
Do: Codfish Hollow Barnstormers
Plan accordingly to catch an exciting live music performance at Codfish Hollow Barnstormers outside of Maquoketa. Since its opening in 2009, the converted 1954 barn has welcomed more than 400 musicians (including the Counting Crows and Norah Jones) to its stage. Tickets for show tend to go quickly, so be sure to plan ahead.
Eat: Bluff Lake Catfish Restaurant
Next, grab a table at Bluff Lake Catfish Restaurant to refuel for the rest of the day’s adventures. Located in the Iowa River Valley between two lakes near Maquoketa, it specializes in all-you-can-eat meals comprised of catfish, prime rib, haddock, shrimp and chicken. You’re sure to leave satisfied.
