In November 2023, @paige.outdoors visited Fort Dodge. “There were so many unexpected gems that we discovered! If you ever have the chance to visit Iowa I highly recommend,” she said. Replicate her trip to experience Fort Dodge’s stunning scenery and unique attractions.
Take in the Scenery
Start your Fort Dodge adventure with a visit to Dolliver Memorial State Park, famed for its natural bluffs and gorgeous views overlooking the Des Moines River Valley. Explore the park’s five miles of rugged trails to check out Boneyard Hollow, a box canyon featuring rocky streams and beautiful cliff formations and see Native American burial mounds.
Next, stop to see Iowa’s largest mural at the Fort Dodge Grain Silo. This 360-degree work of art features portraits of seven residents that shaped Fort Dodge, including African American activist Charlene Washington and World War II veteran Dick Whitcomb. Snap a picture with the 110-foot-tall silo while admiring the artwork and the stories it tells.
Step back in time with a visit to the Fort Museum & Frontier Village. With thousands of artifacts ranging from military memorabilia to Native American art and tools, there’s endless collections to discover. Stroll through the Frontier Village for a taste of Fort Dodge’s history, including an original one-room schoolhouse and 19th century log cabin home.
Then, plan a visit to the John F. Kennedy Memorial Park to enjoy a variety of outdoor activities including camping, hiking or fishing. Float along Badger Lake on a canoe, paddle board or kayak to soak in Fort Dodge’s scenery. While there, visit the Terry Moehnke Veterans Memorial Park, a natural amphitheater that honors service members and overlooks the lake, memorials and public art.
Take the kids for a stroll along the StoryWalk at Children’s Forest, a trail where a children’s story book is deconstructed and posted along the route. While following the trail, keep an eye out for metal sculptures of characters from Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax, engraved tree stumps and more public art.
When visiting Fort Dodge in the fall, the Community Orchard is a must-try family-friendly activity. Hop on a wagon to ride through the orchard, hand-pick your own apples and tour the pumpkin patch and corn maze. Before you leave, stop into the bakery for a delicious homemade treat.
