Do: Summerset Trail
Enjoy a leisurely stroll or bike ride along Summerset Trail, which stretches 11 miles between Indianola and Carlisle. The paved trail is mostly flat and passes through Summerset State Park, where you can enjoy a short loop around its Banner Lakes for a change of scenery.
Do: National Balloon Museum & Hall of Fame
A must-visit in Indianola, this gem of a museum introduces visitors to the history and thrill of hot air ballooning. It’s one of only two balloon museums in the country and offers a unique glimpse into the evolution of balloon flight. The museum’s exhibit spans over 200 years, featuring everything from early ballooning experiments to modern achievements.
Eat: Z’s Eatery & Draught Haus
Sit down to a luxurious meal at Z’s Eatery, whose menu is packed full of lunch and dinner options along with a variety of craft beers and cocktails. Locals especially love their tenderloin and steak dinners, all of which can be enjoyed within an old-school tavern atmosphere.
Stay: Hotel Pommier
Take a break from chain hotels with a stay at the locally owned Hotel Pommier. Formerly known as the beloved landmark hotel The Apple Tree Inn, Hotel Pommier (which means “apple tree” in French) was renovated to offer a modernized lodging experience surrounded by historic charm. Eat: Crouse Café
Treat yourself to a homemade meal at Crouse Cafe. This local legacy serves some of the best pie in the state along with all-day breakfast and delicious lunch items. Even the pickiest eater can delightfully indulge in everything from sweet French toast and fluffy omelets to crispy onion rings, hot sandwiches and more.
Do: Annett Nature Center
Once you’re energized, head to the Annett Nature Center for a serene experience. Hike the miles of wooded trails, wander through the prairie and butterfly garden or climb the observation tower for the best views.
