Calling all builders, dreamers and future engineers! Brick by Brick pairs massive LEGO® masterpieces with exciting design challenges that test your creativity and problem-solving skills. Admire models of engineering wonders like the Burj Khalifa, the tallest building in the world, and the Golden Gate Bridge, which is built to withstand both wind and earthquakes. Then put your own engineering skills to the test by constructing earthquake-resistant towers, using simple machines and engineering to lift your friends and family and exploring even more unique challenges.
Blast off into space without leaving your seat. The Star Theater Planetarium features a 50-foot, 360-degree domed screen, making it the largest and most advanced in the state. Settle in for programming that launches you into the cosmos and introduces the wonders of space—black holes, exploding stars, dark matter, constellations, planets and more—plus stories about aeronautics and space exploration. Explore the Science Center in a more relaxed, welcoming environment during Sensory-Friendly Hours. With softer lighting, lower sound levels and sensory-support tools available, it’s the perfect way for families with sensory sensitivities to enjoy hands-on science fun—at their own pace. These hours are scheduled for the second Tuesday of each month, 4-7 p.m.; admission is free but advanced registration is required.
Science isn’t just for kids. Mixology Nights are held on select Fridays and invite adults (21+) to take over the Science Center for an evening packed with experiments. Each event pairs interactive science fun (no homework required) with themed activities and a vibrant atmosphere. It’s the perfect opportunity for a unique date night or a night out with friends.
Ignite your curiosity and put your hands to work at these 18+ workshops. Designed for those who never outgrew their love of learning, each workshop blends crafting, coding or experimenting with creativity and science in a relaxed social setting. No kids or lectures, just discovery, DIY and endless fun. Adult Workshops are hosted by the Innovation Lab on the second Tuesday of each month from 5:30-7 p.m. Space is limited, so be sure preregister to secure your spot.
Raise a glass to your love for science and community at the Science Center’s annual fundraising event (21+ only). This exciting evening celebration is held each October and features everything from classic fun like craft cocktails, gourmet bites and live entertainment to mind-blowing presentations like explosive science demos and immersive experiences. And it’s all in support of the Science Center’s mission to engage and inspire Iowans of all ages, making it a night that’s as meaningful as it is unforgettable.
Each February, the Science Center brings together girls of all ages and their families for a full day of discovery and curiosity. Celebrate big dreams, the incredible contributions of brilliant women in STEM and how science impacts our daily lives through hands-on science activities and interactive workshops. The festival is held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., and activities are included with general admission, excluding advanced workshops.
Dive into a one-of-a-kind mash-up of science, technology, engineering, art and innovation at the Des Moines Mini Maker Faire. This exciting April event welcomes all ages to tinker, build, experiment and collaborate their way through a variety of exhibitors. Each booth features hands-on activities that allow you to learn a variety of skills, from soldering and building circuits to knitting, crocheting and crafting puppets, plus free and advanced workshops to dive even deeper into a specific technique. There are also a variety of live demonstrations to enjoy throughout the event that further enhance the wonder of making.

This family-friendly celebration transforms the space into a frightfully fun laboratory complete with bubbling potions, hair-raising experiments, creepy critters and glowing surprises. So, dust off your costumes and join the fun, all included with general admission.
Ring in the new year in style and without the unbearably late bedtime. Noon Year’s Eve instead invites families for a countdown to noon complete with a dazzling balloon drop, festive activities and science-fueled celebrations, all included with general admission. It’s the perfect way to wrap up the year and maintain a healthy sleep schedule.
Stargazers unite! Held throughout the summer months, Solar & Star Parties invite astronomy enthusiasts to enjoy dazzling views of the universe through high-powered telescopes, guided by experts. Whether you’re catching a solar flare or tracing constellations, it’s a stellar way to connect with the cosmos. All Solar Parties are held during the Downtown Des Moines Farmers’ Market near the Science Center’s main entrance. And Star Parties are held at different locations around the Des Moines metro after sunset. Both events are free to attend.
