Each February, the Science Center brings together girls of all ages and their families for a full day of discovery and curiosity. Celebrate big dreams, the incredible contributions of brilliant women in STEM and how science impacts our daily lives through hands-on science activities and interactive workshops. The festival is held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., and activities are included with general admission, excluding advanced workshops.
Dive into a one-of-a-kind mash-up of science, technology, engineering, art and innovation at the Des Moines Mini Maker Faire. This exciting April event welcomes all ages to tinker, build, experiment and collaborate their way through a variety of exhibitors. Each booth features hands-on activities that allow you to learn a variety of skills, from soldering and building circuits to knitting, crocheting and crafting puppets, plus free and advanced workshops to dive even deeper into a specific technique. There are also a variety of live demonstrations to enjoy throughout the event that further enhance the wonder of making.
For a Halloween outing complete with eerie experiments and ghostly good times, join the Science Center for its Spooky Science event. This family-friendly celebration transforms the space into a frightfully fun laboratory complete with bubbling potions, hair-raising experiments, creepy critters and glowing surprises. So, dust off your costumes and join the fun, all included with general admission.
Ring in the new year in style and without the unbearably late bedtime. Noon Year’s Eve instead invites families for a countdown to noon complete with a dazzling balloon drop, festive activities and science-fueled celebrations, all included with general admission. It’s the perfect way to wrap up the year and maintain a healthy sleep schedule.
Stargazers unite! Held throughout the summer months, Solar & Star Parties invite astronomy enthusiasts to enjoy dazzling views of the universe through high-powered telescopes, guided by experts. Whether you’re catching a solar flare or tracing constellations, it’s a stellar way to connect with the cosmos. All Solar Parties are held during the Downtown Des Moines Farmers’ Market near the Science Center’s main entrance. And Star Parties are held at different locations around the Des Moines metro after sunset. Both events are free to attend.
