Wilson Prairie

Show Contact Information +
Wilson Prairie is believed to be a remnant, native prairie. In 1922 the Wilson family purchased this parcel, along with several parcels of farm ground. Mr. Wilson appreciated the natural beauty of this prairie and assisted in its protection. We know that the area was grazed by cattle (prior to 1999) and hayed until recently. These practices helped to keep woody encroachment from establishing on the prairie but did allow some brome grass to take over in areas. Louisa County Conservation was about to permanently protect this piece of Iowa History in December of 2019 when it was purchased from the family of Maxine Wilson. A Resource Enhancement and Protection (REAP) grant was secured to purchase the majority of the parcel with Tri-Rivers Conservation Foundation (a private, non-profit 501c3) donating the remainder of money needed for purchase.
