Built in 1856 by Reverend George B. Hitchcock, a Congregational minister, this house provided shelter for escaping slaves prior to the Civil War. It was designated a National Historic Landmark in 2006. In 2006, the Secretary of the Interior announced that the Reverend George B. Hitchcock House had been designated a National Historic Landmark (NHL). The House is open for guided tours starting May 1-September 15 on Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays only. $5 cash/check per adult. No credit cards, although we can take Venmo Parking is free right in front of the Granary Gift Shop. Our Granary & 1st floor of the House are accessible to all. The basement & top floor are only accessible via stairs. Our grounds are managed by Cass County Conservation & open 365 days a year for hiking, birding, picnics and hunting in season. A public restroom is open during the warmer months.
