The Gallup House

Show Contact Information +
The Gallup House is the birthplace and boyhood home of George Gallup, founder of the eponymous Poll. Gallup is considered by many to be one of the most influential people of the 20th century and is one of Iowa's most famous sons. The house has been renovated and returned to its original configuration. It has photos and narratives about Gallup's life and is fitted out with studio furniture. The house is also significant for its octagonal form, a style that was popular in the later half of the 19th century when if was thought to have better structural integrity, be a more efficient use of space and be a better protector from elements, than traditional rectangular houses. The Gallup House is on the National Register of Historic Places. It is located at 703 South Chestnut, Jefferson, Iowa and is open to the public on Saturdays from 9 to 12 in May through October and by appointment for groups of 8+ or for events.
