River Bluffs Scenic Byway - Elkader

Show Contact Information +
Find mesmerizing views, majestic limestone bluffs and small town charm. The City of Elkader was named after Algerian Emir Abdelkader and remains the only city in the U.S. to be named after a Muslim leader. In May 1983, the City signed a resolution to join Sister Cities International and twin with Mascara, Algeria. Mascara Park is now a “pocket park” in downtown Elkader that features a memorial fountain and two peace poles. Visitors to Elkader can enjoy Algerian and Mediterranean cuisine including camel burgers and spanakopita, plus Midwestern favorites, at Schera’s Algerian-American Restaurant in downtown Elkader. Riverside patio seating with views of Elkader’s historic Keystone Bridge is available from April through October.
