Grant Wood Scenic Byway - Stone City

Show Contact Information +
Take in the striking landscape, inspiring art and local wineries in Stone City. This town is named for abundance of Anamosa Limestone quarried by the Weber Stone Company since the 1840's. Today the quarry and fabricating facilities provide one of the largest production capacities of aggregates, landscaping stone and cut stone in the Midwest. In the 1900s the town was home to the Stone City Art Colony, which was co-founded by artist Grant Wood in 1932 to be a mecca for writers, artists and craftspeople. The Stone City Visitor Information Center has interpretive information and a replica of the front of the house featured in Grant Wood's famous American Gothic painting.
