Must Do's

Conveniently situated midway between Ames and Ankeny, the High Trestle Trail, Heart of Iowa Nature Trail, and bike lanes along R38 from Ames all come together in Slater.

Outdoor Adventure & Exciting Eateries

Relax off the trail with a cold drink at Nite Hawk Bar & Grill or the Slater Station, both offering trail users a fun and convenient stop with ample bike and snowmobile parking, open patio, and frequent live entertainment.

Public House 421 serves up delicious coffee and pastries inside a beautifully-restored, cozy historic building. Perhaps one of the best kept secrets in town is the quaint Town & Country Market with deli meat, handmade goods and garden center.

The western terminus of Heart of Iowa Nature Trail is at Trailhead and Arboretum Park - a great picnic stop with large parking, modern restrooms and a playground. The world famous High Trestle Bridge is only 9.5 mi to the west on the High Trestle Trail. No bike? No worries - rent an e-bike seven days a week from Local Spokes.

Community Highlights

The annual July 4th Celebration is one of the best in the area, with a parade and other entertainment, good food, an incredible fireworks display.
