Vesterheim offers free museum admission and family activities on the second Saturday of every month. Kvinden og Hjemmet was a magazine for women that came out in the late 1800s and was published by two Norwegian-American women. The publication included sewing and quilt patterns. Visit the special exhibit Pioneering Pages that features this magazine, and then design and make your own a quilt block using paper shapes. The museum is open from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. with the craft activities in the exhibit gallery from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Special exhibits also offer family fun at Vesterheim! Check out Emigrating to America in Hanson Vesterheim Commons and play the interactive game that goes along with it! The game leads you through a series of decisions as you pretend to immigrate to the U.S. from Norway. Find out who you are when you leave Norway and what happens along your travels to a new home! In the exhibit, Red River Girl: From Telemark to the Buffalo, follow the stories of the Thortvedt family, as they immigrated from Fyresdal, Telemark, to Glyndon, Minnesota, and the many miles between through colorful drawings, paintings, journals, and letters. The exhibit includes hands-on activities for the whole family! Map your own “migration” journey and more! This program is supported by a grant from McElroy Trust with additional gifts from The Depot Outlet and Black Hills Energy.
