Explore Black history in Iowa June 14 • 9 a.m.-4 p.m. All presentations and activities included with General Admission Although Iowa entered the Union as a free state in 1846, the Emancipation Proclamation issued in 1863 still reverberated here. Many Black Iowans had formerly been enslaved in other states. Others had family who had been enslaved.
