Explore Black history in Iowa June 14 • 9 a.m.-4 p.m. All presentations and activities included with General Admission Although Iowa entered the Union as a free state in 1846, the Emancipation Proclamation issued in 1863 still reverberated here. Many Black Iowans had formerly been enslaved in other states. Others had family who had been enslaved. And even in this “free” state, Black citizens were denied full participation in our our democracy. Learn more about Black history in Iowa. Watch for a schedule of activities.
