Despite its small size, Corning is home to some of the state’s best hidden gems. Discover the community’s local legends and unique heritage, dine at one-of-a-kind eateries and embark on outdoor adventures.
Day One
Do: French Icarian Village
Start your Corning adventure by diving into the area’s history at the 1800s French Icarian Village. Located just three miles outside of town, it’s recognized as the longest-lived non-religious utopian community in U.S. history. Schedule a tour to see the restored refectory (community dining hall), schoolhouse, cemetery and library, or check their event calendar to join butter-making classes or a history lesson.
Do: Corning Center for the Fine Arts
After admiring local history, stop by the Corning Center for the Fine Arts to see creations from more than 75 artists throughout two galleries. The Main Gallery includes works from regional and national artists available for purchase, while the Atrium Gallery features rotating exhibits. Plan accordingly to join art classes and see special exhibits.
Eat: Primrose Restaurant
Next, dine in style inside the 100-year-old building that’s been transformed into Primrose Restaurant. This popular eatery introduces diners to local ingredients through a weekly-rotating menu that features elevated dishes ranging from lamb shank and crab-stuffed sole to Korean mac and cheese and more.
Stay: Corning Hotel
When you’re ready to hit the hay, book a cozy room at the Corning Hotel. This 33-room boutique hotel offers all the perks you’d ever need, including complimentary breakfast and a free pass to the local health center for access to its indoor track, sauna and workout equipment. Choose from seven different types of rooms to further customize your stay.
Day Two
Do: Johnny Carson Birthplace
Start the day by learning all there is to know about a local legend at the Johnny Carson Birthplace, where the famed talk show host was born in 1925. Stroll through the historically restored home to share memories of your favorite episodes, have your picture taken with Johnny as a guest on his show and more. The home is open every Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Memorial Day through September or by appointment.
Eat: Fire & Salt Co.
Stock up for a picnic at Fire & Salt Co. This unique meat market promotes Iowa’s farms and producers by selling carefully selected high quality products. Their inventory includes everything from Midwest-quality beef and cheese products and hard-to-find seafood items to BBQ supplies, recipes, snack mixes, olive oil and balsamic vinegar, wines and spirits and even home goods.
