Chautauqua Park

Show Contact Information +
In 1908, land was purchased that is now Chautauqua Park and shortly after, the construction of the pavilion began. It was said that this pavilion was one of only three such structures between the Mississippi and Missouri Rivers. What was unique about it was that it had a platform with dressing rooms underneath with seating for about 3,500 people. In 1921, the park was purchased from the Chautauqua Association for assuming the indebtedness against it, between $800 and $1,000. This comprised an area of 15-20 acres. In 1972, the pavilion was listed on the National Register of Historical Sites. During Christmas, this historic landmark is even more eye-catching with the giant star on top and the string of lights along the roof which not only illuminates the surrounding area, but the Christmas spirit as well. The stone pillars at the Summit Street entrance were built by the National Youth Administration.
