In September 2023, @lizannelately spent a weekend in Marshalltown. “We visited during their annual Oktemberfest weekend to celebrate the town and we uncovered so many unique places and facts about Marshalltown that I truly didn’t know before spending some time here!” she said. No matter when you visit, there is a lot to see and do in Marshalltown. “I was surprised by Marshalltown’s public art scene too. [There were] so many murals to see.” Replicate her trip.
Day One
Once you arrive, indulge in Marshalltown’s vibrant food scene with lunch at The Flying Elbow. This professional wrestling-themed joint features one of the best burgers in Iowa (crowned in 2022), hot dogs and a wide selection of beers on tap. Pro-tip: definitely get the Vader tots.
After lunch, head to the Marshalltown Arts & Civic Center for an enriching experience. Created by J.W. and Dorothy Fisher back in 1958, the former Fisher Community Center was recently renovated. Enjoy impressionistic and post-impressionistic art at the Fisher Art Center, featuring a unique opportunity to hear the story about the Monet painting that was stolen in the 1980s and was eventually recovered.
For dinner, head to Tannin for a relaxing environment that’s perfect for enjoying charcuterie, flatbreads and shareable eats like buffalo cauliflower and goat cheese bites. An extensive selection of wines and craft beers are available to pair.
The historic Tremont Inn is centrally located in Marshalltown’s commercial district, making it the perfect choice for immersing yourself in the community. Two full-service restaurants, Tremont on Main and Tremont Grille, are also onsite in case you need a nightcap.
Day Two
Soak up more of Marshalltown’s art culture by touring numerous public art installations and murals. An interactive and downloadable map makes it super easy to plan your stops and snap photos at the gallery garden, the postcard mural, the Buddha statue and more.
After working up an appetite, La Carreta Mexican Grill will hit the spot with a number of local favorites and build-your-own lunch combo options. For the sweet tooth, Lillie Mae Chocolates is a must-visit, serving up small batch and hand-dipped chocolates since 1939.
Note: If you’re planning to visit in late September, be sure to pencil in time to celebrate Marshalltown’s culture and community with the annual Oktemberfest featuring global cuisine, low rider competitions, a hometown parade, live music and a carnival. You can also stop by Appleberry Farm for apple picking and a dose of fall fun.
