INSPIRED is the Foundation's annual fundraising and educational event. We present powerful speakers on meaningful topics, and learn from their wisdom and experience. This year Award-wining journalist and author Laura Ling will share her personal story in the struggle for freedom, how she maintains hope, and how she hopes to inspire others to “view our liberties as a responsibility, not just as a right.” Laura Ling was reporting on the trafficking of North Korean women in 2009 when she and her colleague were arrested by North Korean soldiers along the Chinese border. For 140 harrowing days, they were imprisoned, a tale she documented in her 2010 memoir, Somewhere Inside: One Sister’s Captivity in North Korea and the Other’s Fight to Bring Her Home. Ling is a recognized producer, documentarian, and investigative journalist. She created Vanguard, a documentary series for Current TV, covering issues ranging from teen suicide and the challenges faced by military spouses to underground youth subcultures in America. As a Current TV correspondent, she has reported on global concerns including the drug war in Mexico and women’s rights in Turkey, garnering numerous awards and Emmy nominations. Ling’s podcast, Everyday Bravery, along with her documentary series, The Power of Kindness, bring both creative and scientific approaches to personal growth and resilience. She is a Service Ambassador for Points of Light, was named Glamour Magazine’s Woman of the Year (2009), editorialist for the Los Angeles Times and CNN.com, and has appeared on ABC’s Nightline, NBC, and PBS. Plan to join us for this important event that supports girls and women in our community. Masks not required but, encouraged.
