The Harlan Lincoln House was built by Senator James Harlan in 1876. This home was moved to its current location and attached to an existing house. Senator Harlan was the first Republican Senator from Iowa in 1855 to 1872. The Harlan and Lincoln names were combined when Abraham Lincoln's and Mary Todd Lincoln's son, Robert Todd Lincoln, married Mary Harlan in 1868. The home contains many original furnishings and mementoes from the Lincoln and Harlan families. The Lincoln family produced three children who grew up in the Harlan home during summers and holidays. The memorabilia includes original furniture, including Senator Harlan's Senate desk, Mary Todd Lincoln's mourning veil after he husband was assassinated and furnishings from the Robert Todd Lincoln home in Chicago.
