Grant Wood Scenic Byway

grant_wood.jpgIowa native Grant Wood is celebrated as the painter of America’s most famous work of art, “American Gothic,” the archetype of the regionalist artistic movement. Travel eastern Iowa’s rounded hills and colorful woodlands, and you’ll see the places that inspired “Stone City” and other legendary Grant Wood paintings. A picture-perfect place: adventurous caves, relaxing bed-and-breakfast inns, canyonlike cliffs and barges navigating the mightiest river of them all.

Take Highway 64 from Anamosa to Maquoketa; follow the 428 loop or take Highway 62 to Andrew, then E17 and Z15 to Springbrook and Bellevue.
