With a collective experience of over 100 years of handbell ringing, Sonos Handbell Ensemble's virtuosity mesmerizes audiences at major world events including the World Ice Skating Championships and the United Nations 50th Anniversary Celebrations. They have collaborated with Grammy-nominated and Grammy-winning artists such as the Kronos Quartet, composer Libby Larsen, the San Francisco Symphony and mezzo-soprano Frederica von Stade.
Presenting a program of music from the Americas, Sonos performs music of George Gershwin (Porgy and Bess), Leonard Bernstein (West Side Story), Heitor Villa-Lobos (Bachianas Brasileiras) plus Roger Wiesmeyer's Grace, with cellist Emil Miland. Also featured on the program are two works written by James Meredith, for Sonos: a signature avant garde work, Sonics and a hauntingly beautiful elegy for cello and handbells, Smirti ("Remembrance"), commemorating 9/11.
Not only is the ensemble's performance entrancing to watch, but Artist Director James Meredith's engaging interaction with the audience makes the music all the more enjoyable. This is a program for all ages and musical backgrounds.
