Iowa Scenic Byways
Iowa River Valley Scenic Byway
Follow the winding Iowa River to historic communities, including Iowa’s only settlement of American Indians — the Meskwaki. View Lincoln Highway landmarks in Belle Plaine and an 1861 log house at the Pioneer Heritage Museum in Marengo. The Highway 220 Trail leads to the Amana Colonies, a National Historic Landmark; well-preserved brick and stone buildings line the streets of the seven villages. Your drive will take you past the beautiful Lily Lake and through the fertile countryside that beckoned to the founders of these communal colonies.
Take Highway 30 east of Marshalltown to county road T47 and head south to Montour. Then follow E49 east to Tama, and E64 south and east to V18 and through Chelsea. Follow E66 east to Belle Plaine and Highway 21 south to Iowa Highway 212, which takes you to Marengo. From U.S. Highway 6 east of town, a loop goes through the Amana Colonies on Highway 220. You can also return to Marengo on F15.
