Hollywood in Iowa & the Iowa State Fair

Lights, camera and non-stop action on this three-day tour of the hottest Hollywood stops in Iowa.

This getaway is sponsored by the Iowa State Fair, held annually in August.

Iowa State Fair, Des Moines

Experience the inspiration for the internationally-acclaimed novel State Fair, three motion pictures and a Broadway musical. Head to the Heritage Village, an example of the customs of early Iowa life around the time of the Fair's establishment in 1854. The First Church hosts daily hymn sings at 11:30 a.m. and if you're lucky, you'll catch a wedding. Try an ice-cold pickle at the General Store and visit the Barber Shop, Telephone Company, Depot and Country School.

Make your way up to Pioneer Hall, built for the first State Fair held in Des Moines in 1886. Now, it showcases Iowa agricultural history. Take a break from the heat and visit the Ralph H. Deets Historical Museum. The air-conditioned building showcases an extensive collection of antique furniture, historic records and memorabilia. Located next door in the Richard O. Jacobson Hall and Kenyon Gallery are interactive exhibits of the Fair's 158 year history.

Grab lunch-on-a-stick and rest your feet at one of the Fair's five free stages of music and entertainment.

Tour the livestock barns and see the Super Bull, Big Boar and Big Ram. Next, head to the Elwell Family Food Center and see the competitive food displays. Grab a lemonade shake-up and cool off in the Varied Industries Building. Finally, end your day with a ride on Ye Old Mill - the Fair's oldest permanent amusement ride.

Stay overnight at The Hotel at Prairie Meadows in Altoona. The hotel features a grand entryway and casino access. Enjoy live thoroughbred and quarter horse racing on select days in the summer.

Bridges of Madison County, Winterset Tour the bridges that inspired the Robert J. Waller novel, motion picture and Broadway show, The Bridges of Madison County. Visit the six covered bridges, learn about the bridge history and how they were used in the Hollywood film.

Northside Cafe, Winterset
Enjoy a delicious meal and sit on the very stool Clint Eastwood used in The Bridges of Madison County movie. Shop at the unique stores on the downtown square, including the famous quilt supply store Fons & Porter.

John Wayne Birthplace, Winterset
No visit to Madison County is complete without a stop at John Wayne's birthplace. The Hollywood legend was born Marion Morrison in Winterset in 1907. Step back in time and tour the Duke's childhood home.
