A Weekend Away in Newton

Two days full of appealing attractions await you in Newton - from sculpture walks to dairy farms, there's a little something that will appeal to everyone.

Newton Arboretum & Botanical Garden
Stretch your legs and stroll the beautiful gardens where annuals, perennials, hostas, roses and ornamental grasses are in abundance. Take in the prairie water garden and English knot garden on the paved walking paths.

Maytag Dairy Farm
Manufacturers of the world-famous Maytag Blue Cheese welcome visitors to their cheese shop overlooking the dairy farm. Visitors can view a 10 minute video on visit the packaging area, as well as taste-test and make purchases at the cheese counter.

Hunter Mansion Tea Room & Event Center
Have lunch at the Hunter Mansion Tea Room. The home, built in 1900, has beautifully ornate interior woodwork, open staircases, beamed ceilings and three fireplaces. Check out the mansion's event schedule, which regularly features tea parties, fashion shows and murder mystery parties.

Jasper County Courthouse & Downtown Shopping
Head downtown for some sightseeing and shopping! A focal point of the downtown area, the Jasper County Courthouse, is a neo-classic building with a stained glass dome, hand-painted murals and ceramic tiles restored to their "near period" condition of 1911. After touring the courthouse, do some downtown shopping. You'll find specialty shops for antiques, music, crafts, books, shoes and floral.

Crazy Redhead Quilting
Learn about the growing hobby of quilting at this specialty store that attracts visitors from across the country. Not only does the shop sell quilting supplies, they also have furniture and home decor for sale.

Valle Drive-In
Take in a movie at Central Iowa's only remaining drive-in theatre. A drive-in is open daily and shows current movies as double-features each night.

Newton Sculpture & Mural Tour
More than 70 sculptures and murals are located across the city. Newton is also home to the annual Iowa Sculpture Festival. Walk or drive past these giant works of art. Maps are available of the Newton Visitor Center.

Iowa Speedway
End your sculpture tour at the Iowa Speedway, the first-ever track designed by a driver - Rusty Wallace. The Iowa Speedway hosts IndyCar, NASCAR Nationwide and NASCAR Truck races. Check the racing schedule for events.

Neal Smith Wildlife Refuge & Prairie Learning Center
The refuge is the largest ecosystem reconstruction project in the U.S. with nearly 6,000 acres of protected habitat. Enjoy walking trails, the award-winning Prairie Learning Center, state-of-the-art audio visual programs, interpretive displays and an underground walk-through prairie rootscape.
