Behind the Scenes of Travel Iowa's Commercials

Saw a place on TV you’d like to visit? Travel Iowa’s new television commercials feature stops around the state. Here’s a perfect three-day getaway so you want to visit them all!

Union Pacific Railroad Museum, Council Bluffs
All aboard for an Iowa getaway! Council Bluffs was a major railroad center in the late 1800s with almost all of the large railroads passing through town, including the transcontinental railroad. At the Union Pacific Railroad Museum, you’ll trace the development of these railroads and the American West – and the kids will have fun climbing onto cabooses and playing with the interactive screens.

Blue Bunny Ice Cream Parlor & Museum, Le Mars
This old-fashioned ice cream parlor and museum is perfectly sweet. You can sample all of Blue Bunny’s ice cream flavors, try a traditional ice cream sundae or go all-out with a Kryptonice Cream Sundae (Scooper Hero® ice cream with Pop Rocks®) or a Dirt & Worms Mud Puddle (chocolate ice cream with gummi worms).

King’s Pointe Resort & Waterpark, Storm Lake
End your first day of your trip at King’s Pointe in Storm Lake. The hotel features an indoor and outdoor waterpark, a mini golf course and a beach that lines the lake – climb the lighthouse and check out the view!

Reiman Gardens, Ames
This garden oasis features both indoor and outdoor exhibits with seasonal displays (they’re open year-round). A favorite with kids is the 2,500-square-foot Butterfly Wing where you’ll be able to walk among the winged creatures and watch them land on your finger.

State Capitol Building, Des Moines
You’ll be blown away by the beauty of this landmark. In the rotunda, you’ll be able to gaze up hundreds of feet to the top of the dome. Or, visit the Senate or House Chambers to see where the laws are debated and made. Schedule a guided tour to see the stunning law library and hear the full history of the state.

Des Moines Art Center, Des Moines
A perfect place to introduce your kids to fine art – admission is free to the Des Moines Art Center and the space is full of light and beautiful art. The museum also features family workshops with hands-on art projects and provides family activity suggestions for the exhibits. As an added bonus, stop by the nearby Pappajohn Sculpture Park and watch the kids frolic among giant works of art.

Matchstick Marvels, Gladbrook
You will literally marvel over the 4 million matchsticks that have been artfully crafted into 65 detailed models of buildings, machines and sculptures. See scale models of the U.S. Capitol, the Challenger space shuttle, Notre Dame Cathedral, Hogwarts and more.

NewBo City Market, Cedar Rapids
Grab dinner at the NewBo City Market in the heart of Cedar Rapids’ New Bohemia District – full of restaurants and gift shops. The market holds several weekly farmer’s markets and is home to permanent food vendors ranging from cupcakes and coffee to pasta and pizza. For kids, there is a learning garden, sandbox and regular activities.

National Mississippi River Museum & Aquarium, Dubuque
Visit the six aquariums with river creatures ranging from giant catfish to stingrays. Kids get up close and personal with snails and crawfish in the touch tank. Spy on the otters, ducks and birds in the outdoors wetland. Virtually steer a Mississippi River barge through a lock and dam system. The possibilities for learning are endless.

FunCity, Burlington
End your getaway on a truly fun note at FunCity in Burlington. Newly opened are BallocityTM and Sky Trail® – which bring a whole new level of fun to the complex! Your family can also jump on the go-karts, play laser tag, go bowling, splash in the indoor/outdoor waterpark and visit the arcade. For adults, the attached Catfish Bend Casino, spa and golf course are welcome treats after a three-day family adventure.
