Four Hours of Fun: Mason City, Clear Lake & Forest City

A vacation doesn’t have to take up days and days of your time! Explore a corner of the state in just one morning or afternoon.

Stockman House, Mason City
Spend some time in the early 1900s and tour Frank Lloyd Wright's only "Prairie School" home in Iowa. The Stockman House was built in 1908 and houses fine art and reproductions of Wright-period furniture. Be sure to swing by the beautifully-restored Historic Park Inn Hotel while in Mason City, the last hotel designed by Wright.

Music Man Square, Mason City
Visit the 1912 River City Streetscape in the Music Man Square. This town center replica features an ice cream parlor, gift shop and set designs from the movie classic, The Music Man.

Surf Ballroom, Clear Lake
Step onto the hardwood floor and dance! The Surf Ballroom was the last concert venue for Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and "The Big Bopper." Reminisce about the origins of rock-and-roll and teach the kids a few moves.

Pilot Knob State Park, Forest City
Explore Iowa's second highest point at the "Pilot Knob" tower. Within the 700-acre park, you can also visit Dead Man's Lake and hiking trails.
