Mark Rothko, bad boy genius of the modern art world, has a major commission to create murals for New York's famed Four Season Restaurant. For two years he works feverishly with his young assistant, Ken, in a studio in the Bowery. But when Ken challenges the great artist, Rothko rages at the contradiction between art and commercialism, ambition and vulnerability.
