Algona

Algona is bordered on three sides by the Des Moines River and the wooded hills of Ambrose A. Call State Park. Learn about a fascinating local legacy: the World War II prisoner of war camp that housed more than 8,000 Germans and Italians here. Camp Algona POW Museum

Camp Algona housed up to 10,000 German prisoners of war from 1944 to 1946. The 70-foot linear display tells the story of this camp and its effect on the military and civilians in Algona. Weapons exhibit, World War II uniforms and artifacts, and displays of poetry, paintings and woodcarvings.
