A home for Norwegian-American immigrants since the 1850s, Decorah hosts an annual Nordic Fest every July, which attracts an estimated 75,000 people. Add to that the town’s Vesterheim Norwegian-American Museum – the country’s largest museum devoted to one immigrant ethnic group. “Stay at the historic Hotel Winneshiek—or just outside of town at Little House on the Farm, a B&B built as a replica of the home on the TV show ‘Little House on the Prairie,’” says Kendra Williams, travel editor for Midwest Living magazine. Biking, fishing, hiking – even ice fishing – are all within an arm’s throw of Decorah, and the best part is, you can leave your passport at home.
