Four Hours of Fun: Decorah

A vacation doesn’t have to take up days and days of your time! Explore a corner of the state in just one morning or afternoon. You'll be able to get the kids off the couch and away from the video games for a half-day of learning and activity - get the whole family moving and create memories along your (short) journey.

Vesterheim Museum

Learn about the centuries-long history of Norwegian-Americans in northeast Iowa and across the country. This museum offers a look at the history of immigration as well as Norwegian-American folk and fine art. Check the museum calendar for a list of classes in decorative painting, woodcarving and textiles.

Decorah Fish Hatchery

Visit this state-of-the-art trout rearing station where you can see and feed fish of all sizes. A quarter buys a handful of food - make sure to stand back when you throw it in or you'll get splashed in the feeding frenzy! While you're at the hatchery, visit Decorah's famous bald eagle's nest, located across the street.

Trout Run Trail

This 11-mile loop around Decorah runs right next to the hatchery and features sculptures along the trail and an LED-lit bridge.

Mabe's Pizza

Refuel at this northeast Iowa favorite. Gobble up pizza, chicken, pasta, sandwiches and salads. This family-owned restaurant offers hospitality just as excellent as the food.
