Savor the Flavors of Europe in Western Iowa

Travel through southwest Iowa on a two-day "taste-full" European experience as you visit a French Icarian communal dining hall, a collection of Swedish artifacts, a Danish Windmill and a German Hausbarn.

 

French Icarian Village, Corning
Bonjour and Bievenue! to Iowa's French Icarian Village, where you'll learn the unique history of French immigrants whose "all for one and one for all" philosophy brought them to Adams County to establish an equalitarian community. Get a glimpse of an Icarian child's school day, meet and visit with an Icarian during a cemetery visit and le dejeune on a Pique-nique Francaise.
 

Corning Winery & Vineyard, Corning
Enjoy a taste of award-winning wines while relaxing on a floating tasting room with a view of the vineyard.
 

Swedish Heritage & Cultural Center, Stanton
The Swedish Heritage and Cultural Center celebrates the the Swedish roots of the area with artifacts, photographs and a restored one-room schoolhouse.
 

Swedish Delicacies & Coffee, Stanton
While in Stanton, sample some Swedish delicacies. Spritz cookies, pickled herring, pepparkakor and ostkaka with lingonberries are dished up with small-town hospitality.

Make sure to look up while you're in town! The two Swedish Coffeepot water towers can hold more than three million cups of coffee between the two of them. Stanton is the birthplace of Virginia Christine, better known as "Mrs. Olson" from Folgers coffee commercials.
 

Danish Inn Restaurant, Elk Horn
Savor the flavors of unique Danish fare at the Danish Inn Restaurant. Delicious specialties like frikadeller (meatballs) and rodkal (red cabbage) are served with potatoes, preserved sour vegetables and thick brown gravy.

 

Danish Windmill, Elk Horn
Start your day by discovering the story of the Danish immigration from the mid-19th century to the present. See the Danish windmill, built in 1848 in Norre Snede, Denmark, and hear the story of how it traveled to Iowa.
 

Museum of Danish America, Elk Horn
Celebrate the continuing relationship between Denmark and the United States and learn about traditions carried on by later generations of Danish-Americans through permanent and traveling exhibits.
 

The Little Mermaid, Kimballton
Venture over to Elk Horn's "twin village" of Kimballton to see The Little Mermaid, a replica of the famous mermaid that stands in the Copenhagen harbor and honors H.C. Andersen's fairy tale, "The Little Mermaid."
 

Manning Hausbarn - Heritage Park, Manning
Start your tour at the Trinity Church, which is more than 125 years old. Then, discover the German hausbarn, or bauernhaus. The hausbarn was built in 1660 and reconstructed in Manning in 1999. Finally, visit the Leet/Hassler farmstead, where you'll be able to wander the farm and hear stories of the original owners.
