Trail follows the path of the 1st U.S. Dragoons, cavalry soldiers who scouted Iowa in 1835 after the Black Hawk Purchase put the area under U.S. government patrol. The trail follows the course of the Des Moines River from Fort Dodge to Knoxville and Lake Red Rock.
